OUR
CLASSROOM
The
CanAdventure Education concept was in part inspired by
the surroundings in which its founders have spent much
of their lives; Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
Our Island is not only beautiful and inspiring beyond
imagination for anyone hailing from North America's urban
centres, but also a region that offers unparalleled educational
opportunities. Adventure camps
simply could not ask for more perfect home than British
Columbia. Few places come close to the combination of
pristine wilderness, biodiversity, history, and ready
access to both mountain and coastal recreation playgrounds
as that which is found on Vancouver Island.
CanAdventure
Education adventure camps are based out of Sayward, BC,
in the Comox Strathcona recreation corridor on central
Vancouver Island. Comox, derived from the local First
Nations word for "land of plenty", provides
every natural characteristic our program could ask for
- awe-inspiring scenery, secluded wilderness areas, a
vast array of wildlife, and endless hiking trails.
.
Our base camp is located on 40 private acres bordering
the crystal clear waters of the Salmon River. Our property
features majestic old-growth forest, grassy meadows, and
countless species of edible and culturally significant
plants. We are graced with regular visits from a local
herd of Roosevelt Elk and the annual salmon run draws
in wildlife of all kinds, including black bears and bald
eagles. Our facilities include a 1,500 square foot lodge,
cabins for winter accommodation, prospector-style wall
tents for summer lodging, a commercial kitchen, hot showers,
and laundry facilities. While at base camp, youth join
in a morning fitness and stretching routine on our jogging
trail, daily chores to maintain the cleanliness of their
living space, curricular activities, and a nightly council
fire that provides an opportunity to share what is on
their minds and in their hearts. Curricular activities
include workshops in one of our four focus areas; environmental
studies, cultural awareness, wilderness skills, and personal
growth. Participants may find themselves engaged in team-building
activities on the challenge course, participating in a
ceremony in our traditional sweat lodge, checking in with
one of our clinical counsellors, or taking a dip in the
perfect swimming hole off the back of our property.
.
Our base camp provides a training ground and launch point
for our wilderness expeditions,
where participants spend 60-70% of their CanAdventure
Education experience.
At
CanAdventure Education, our environment is a source of
constant inspiration to us.
We look forward to sharing it with you.
