Academics:
CanAdventure Education programs offer hands-on
learning in North American and First Nations history,
earth sciences, and environmental studies. The
academic curriculum is built on a series of hands-on
experiential wilderness activities that meet provincially-dictated
learning outcomes in their respective areas while
bringing real-world relevance to subject material
and a captivating new approach to learning.
Culture:
Vancouver Island's landscape is rich with
the culture of many great peoples. CanAdventure
Education programs explore areas of significance
to First Nations and European cultures, including
the Gulf Islands, Cape Scott, Johnstone Strait,
and Nootka Island. First-hand experience on these
trips promotes an appreciation of culture and
its connection to the environment -past, present,
and future.
Skills:
Wilderness expeditions are an excellent training
ground for skills that will become a valuable
resource later in life. By nature, adventure activities
promote among struggling teens physical fitness
and basic proficiency in trip-planning, navigation,
camp set-up / take-down, cooking, and other technical
areas. Coupled with advancement of these skills,
CanAdventure Education fosters a love for the
outdoors that results in a healthy lifestyle for
years to come.
Personal
Growth: A change of environment provides an
opportunity for a struggling teen to challenge
themselves in new ways. Adventure activities provide
a fertile ground for participants to see beyond
preconceived limitations and discover their untapped
potential. Throughout CanAdventure Education programs,
instructors guide participants through the challenges
that they face, facilitating growth in areas of
values orientation, communication, conflict resolution,
respect, goal-setting, and strategies for continued
success beyond our program.
Therapeutic
Focus Sessions:
CanAdventure
Education's core experiential struggling teen
wilderness curriculum is complimented by Therapeutic
Focus Sessions, designed to provide interventions
for youth experiencing behavior challenges and/or
addiction issues. Sessions, which may include
workshops on family issues, anger management,
drug and alcohol abuse, physical and sexual abuse,
and suicide and self-harm, allow the therapeutic
value of the existing core adventure education
program for struggling teens to be maximized.
Therapeutic Focus Sessions are developed, delivered,
and overseen by minimum Masters-level Registered
Clinical Counsellors who are independent professionals
working in private practice. Our Associate Counsellors
visit CanAdventure Education regularly to help
participants explore deeper therapeutic issues
and to support the progress and effectiveness
of our ongoing personal growth curriculum.
